Guide

Is it safe to give an AI agent your inbox?

Short answer: yes, with limits — and no if you give it send/delete power and trust every summary it writes. An AI agent that only drafts replies from a mailbox you control is useful. An agent that can send money moves, change vendor details, or forward your mail without you reading the original message is a different risk. In October 2026, security researchers showed phishing emails built for both audiences at once: the person who reads the inbox, and the AI assistant that summarises it. Start read-only or draft-only, approve high-impact actions, and treat every inbound message as untrusted data — not a command.

What to hand to an agent first

  • Least privilege

Start with read (and maybe draft) access. Don't grant send, delete or full-account scopes just in case.

  • Prefer a dedicated mailbox

Use agent@yourbusiness.com or a filtered label when you can. Keep 2FA codes, banking alerts and password resets out of that view if possible.

  • Draft mode by default

The agent prepares; you approve. Loosen one routine at a time after a clean week.

  • Human approval for high-impact actions

Payments, vendor bank-detail changes, refunds, mass emails, sharing files outside the company, deleting mail. Check the original message, not only the agent's summary.

  • Verify payment changes separately

Call or message the vendor using contact details you already trust, not the ones in the suspicious thread.

  • Log and revoke

Keep a short daily log of what it read, drafted and what's waiting. Revoke OAuth access the same day if something looks off.

Grok Bot routine: Inbox triage with drafted replies
Schedule: Twice daily 9:00 and 15:00

Twice a day, go through new emails. Label each as Reply, FYI or Ignore. For Reply, write a draft in my voice (short, friendly, direct) and save it as a draft, never send. Send me a list of drafts to approve and any FYIs worth knowing.

Rules: draft first, never send or post anything external without my approval. Keep summaries short.
