Telegram AI agent for small business

Telegram is a common home for an AI agent because bots are free to create and the Bot API is open. There are two jobs here: a private control chat where your agent sends you briefs and asks for your OK before it acts, and a customer-facing bot that answers questions. Start with the first. Bots are created and managed through Telegram's @BotFather (Telegram Bot Features). If your customers are on WhatsApp instead, see WhatsApp AI agent for small business. Time figures here are estimates, not measurements.

What to hand to an agent first

  • Your private control chat

The agent sends your morning brief, drafts and 'OK to send?' questions to one private chat. You reply yes or no. This is the safest first setup because nothing goes out without a tap from you.

  • Approval before actions

Anything that sends, deletes, pays or posts waits for your reply in the chat. Keep a short list of actions the agent may do without asking, and add to it slowly.

  • Customer FAQ bot

A bot answers repeat questions (hours, prices, booking link) from approved answers and hands the rest to you. Telegram's docs say your backend should check that a user is authorised for any command, whatever the menu shows (Telegram Bot Features).

  • Groups

In a team or customer group, bots run in privacy mode by default and only see certain messages, such as commands and replies to the bot (Telegram Bot Features). Keep it on unless you have a reason to turn it off.

Example: Grok Bot setup

Grok Bot routine: CEO morning brief in 5 minutes
Schedule: Daily 7:30

Every morning, read my calendar for today, my unread emails from the last 24h and yesterday's revenue. Send me a brief: (1) meetings with one prep note each, (2) emails that need my reply with a suggested one-line answer, (3) money in/out, (4) the 3 highest-leverage tasks for today. Keep it under 200 words.

Rules: draft first, never send or post anything external without my approval. Keep summaries short.

Setup steps

  1. Create a bot with @BotFather and store the token in your tool's secret manager.
  2. Connect it to your agent and lock commands to your own user ID.
  3. Send yourself the daily brief and draft approvals in that chat.
  4. List the few actions it may take without asking.
  5. Only then consider a customer FAQ bot or a group, with privacy mode on.

Keep these human

  • Treat the bot token like a password: never paste it into a chat, a doc or a prompt.
  • Only accept commands from your own Telegram user ID in the control chat.
  • Keep privacy mode on in groups unless the bot truly needs every message.
  • Refunds, complaints, health and legal questions go to you.
  • Start in draft mode: the agent prepares, you approve, then you loosen the leash routine by routine.
