How do you set Grok Bot on the iPhone Action Button? Setup, fixes when only Grok shows up, and 10 things to say

Updated · by Rosh Perera

To set Grok Bot on the iPhone Action Button, update the Grok Bot app to 1.16 on an iPhone 15 Pro or later, then open Settings, tap Action Button, swipe to Shortcut and choose Grok Bot, then Start Voice Chat. If only Grok shows up and not Grok Bot, check that the app is on 1.16 and that you swiped to Shortcut, not Controls. Press and hold the button to talk to your Bot. Below are the exact steps from xAI's @bot account, what to check when it isn't showing, and 10 things to say when you press it, each linked to a ready-made routine. Grok Bot facts come from xAI's @bot posts on X, xAI's docs and changelog, and the iPhone side from Apple's iPhone User Guide, checked 20 Oct 2026. Want a pick for your exact business? How do you set Grok Bot on the iPhone Action Button?

  • The steps, from xAI

xAI's @bot account says: "On an iPhone 15 Pro or later, update Grok Bot to 1.16." Then: "Then go to Settings → Action Button, swipe to Shortcut, and choose Grok Bot → Start Voice Chat." To use it, Apple's iPhone User Guide says: "To perform the action assigned to the Action button, press and hold the Action button."

  • Grok Bot not showing in Action Button settings? Only Grok shows up

You want Grok Bot, not Grok (our Grok vs Grok Bot guide explains the difference). @bot's steps start with the update, so first update Grok Bot to 1.16 in the App Store. Then check you're on the right action: @bot says to "swipe to Shortcut", not Controls. If Grok Bot still isn't in the list after the update, we found no other official fix as of 20 Oct 2026. You can still open a chat in the app and choose Start voice chat. What other users tried (not from xAI): in one user's report, Grok Bot wasn't an option until they updated the Grok Bot app, and then it was. Others still don't see it after updating, so treat this as a report, not a fix.

  • The button opens the app but not voice chat, or does nothing

Apple's guide says: "For the Controls, Shortcut, and Accessibility actions, you need to tap the button below the action and select a specific option", "otherwise the Action button does nothing". So after you swipe to Shortcut, tap the button under it and choose Grok Bot, then Start Voice Chat. If the button opens the app but no voice chat starts, check the option picked under Shortcut: @bot's steps say "choose Grok Bot → Start Voice Chat", so pick Start Voice Chat, not only the app.

  • Which iPhones and app version you need

@bot names an iPhone 15 Pro or later and Grok Bot 1.16. Apple says that on supported models, iPhone "has an Action button in place of the Ring/Silent switch". xAI's mobile docs list an "iPhone with iOS 18 or later" for the app itself, plus an eligible plan.

  • On Android

@bot's launch post is about the iPhone: "Set it as your iPhone's Action Button and press it to talk with Bot." We found no Android button setup on xAI's pages as of 20 Oct 2026. On Android you can still talk to your Bot in the app. xAI's docs say: "Choose Start voice chat when the composer is empty to talk with the Bot live."

  • If the call drops or you hang up early

xAI's changelog says: "If a voice chat's connection drops, the call reconnects and continues the same conversation instead of ending." It also says: "If you hang up a voice chat while a Bot is still working on your request, it finishes and posts the result in the chat." So you can ask for something, hang up and check the chat later.

  • Drafts still wait for you

xAI's mobile docs say: "When a Bot prepares an email or Slack message, the conversation can show a draft you can edit." Say "draft" in what you ask, and keep Ask first rules for email and posts (our Grok Bot approvals guide). The 10 prompts below are our own examples, not xAI's.

  • Which Bot answers when I press the Action Button?

xAI's posts and docs don't say which of your Bots the Action Button talks to, or whether you can pick one, as of 20 Oct 2026. Check the chat after your first press so you know where answers land.

  • Start from a template, not a blank page

xAI's Use cases page lists 56 jobs and its official Marketplace lists 90 public templates, as of 20 Oct 2026 (our Grok Bot template stats page). Our templates page has drafts-first versions with copy-ready prompts, and our free What should my bot do? planner picks a first job for a business.

What do I use the Action Button for? 10 things to say to Grok Bot

  • Say: "Give me my morning brief." It works best once you've set up a morning brief routine, so the Bot knows which calendar and inbox to read.
  • Say: "What's waiting for my approval?" Reads back the drafts your Bots have queued. Pairs with a daily approval list.
  • Say: "What needs a reply in my inbox today?" A spoken version of our inbox triage routine: who needs you, and what can wait.
  • Say: "What's on my calendar today, and what should I prep?" Gets you a short prep note per meeting. See the meeting prep routine.
  • Say: "Draft a follow-up to the lead I just spoke to. Don't send it." Say their name and what they asked. Our lead follow-up routine keeps it going after day one.
  • Say: "Which quotes from last week got no reply? Draft a nudge for each." Ideal between jobs. The quote follow-up routine runs it on a schedule.
  • Say: "Draft reminders for tomorrow's appointments." You approve the list before anything goes. See the appointment reminders routine.
  • Say: "Which invoices are overdue? Draft a polite reminder for each." Our invoice chaser routine sets the tone and the schedule.
  • Say: "Here are my notes from that meeting. Turn them into next steps and a follow-up draft." Talk right after the meeting while it's fresh. More in our meeting notes and follow-ups guide.
  • Say: "Turn what I just told you about today's job into three post drafts." Nothing posts without you. The one-into-ten content routine does this every week.
