Can a Slack message start a Grok Bot routine? Examples and setup

Updated · by Rosh Perera

Yes. A Grok Bot routine can start when the Bot is mentioned, when a word or phrase appears, when you react to a message, or on any message, in one channel or all of Slack. Keep the channel and phrase narrow, because a busy trigger runs often and spends usage. Checked 20 Oct 2026 against Cursor help, docs.x.ai and the xAI changelog. We're an independent site, not part of xAI.

How does a Slack message start a Grok Bot routine?

  • Two different Slack pieces

The Slack app lets your Bot read and post. It "posts as the Slack user you connected, not as a separate bot that has to be invited", and only in channels that user can post in. A Slack trigger is part of a routine. It decides when the routine runs. Connect Slack on the Cursor account that owns the Bot first.

  • The four trigger types

    1. Bot is mentioned. 2. A word or phrase appears. 3. You react to a message. 4. Any message. Each can watch one channel or all of Slack. Only new activity counts. Messages from before the trigger existed don't start a run.

  • Example routines (ours)

Invoice question to owner: Trigger: Phrase "invoice"; Channel: #accounts; What the Bot does: Finds the invoice, drafts an answer; Waits for you: The reply. Lead form to CRM draft: Trigger: Phrase "new lead"; Channel: #leads; What the Bot does: Drafts a CRM entry; Waits for you: Saving the entry. Save for later: Trigger: Your reaction; Channel: #general; What the Bot does: Adds the message to a to-do list; Waits for you: Nothing. Quote request: Trigger: Mention; Channel: #sales; What the Bot does: Drafts a quote from your price list; Waits for you: Sending the quote. Complaint flag: Trigger: Phrase "refund"; Channel: #support; What the Bot does: Summarizes and drafts a reply; Waits for you: The reply. Daily digest: Trigger: Schedule, not Slack; Channel: none; What the Bot does: Summarizes #support each evening; Waits for you: Nothing.

  • xAI's own example

From xAI's docs: "When a message in #customer-escalations contains a support ticket link and the phrase 'needs repro,' ... Never post back to Slack without approval." xAI warns against broad listeners such as "every new message".

  • Don't burn your usage

Cursor help: "a Slack trigger on a busy channel can use a week of usage in a day". Use one channel and an exact phrase.

  • Why a Slack routine didn't run

Check: the routine isn't paused, When to run shows the right trigger, the message is new, in the watched channel, and matches the phrase. Some runs can fail with "Automation run rate limit exceeded", which isn't retried automatically, so rerun with Test (noted 20 Oct 2026).

  • Teams

Team Bots work in Slack and reply in threads. A teammate can ask a Team Bot in Slack to set up, change, pause or delete their routines after linking Slack under Settings > General > Team Bots.

What should stay with you?

  • Keep anything sent, posted, bought or deleted in your name behind your approval. Before actions like these, a Bot shows you what it wants to do and you choose Allow once, Always allow or Deny (xAI's Approvals docs).
  • Never paste a password or one-time code in chat. Sign in yourself with Take over, then choose I'm done (xAI's Approvals docs).
