Why does a website time out or show a connection error on my Grok Bot's computer?
Updated · by Rosh Perera
The Bot's computer reaches the internet through Cursor's shared network, and some sites and services drop those connections even when the same address opens on your own device. Update, Recover and Reset don't change this. Instead, turn on Route traffic through this computer, or let the Bot run commands on your desktop, under Settings > Computer. Checked 20 Oct 2026 against Cursor help and docs.x.ai. We're an independent site, not part of xAI.
Why do some sites time out on a Grok Bot's computer?
What you'll see
Cursor help lists the signs: a timeout, a secure connection error, or a page that never loads. It can hit a supplier portal, your own server, or a service you connect to with an app password.
Skip these
Update, Recover and Reset don't change how the Bot's computer reaches a site. Reset can also lose very recent work. Save them for when the computer itself is unreachable.
Two settings that help
Both live in Settings > Computer > Your computer. 1. Route traffic through this computer. The Bot's browser uses your desktop's connection, so the site sees your network and IP address. It applies to new connections and works while the Grok Bot desktop app is open. If the row asks you to update the Bot's computer first, choose Update. A team admin can lock this switch. 2. Execution on this computer. The Bot runs commands and scripts, including API calls, on your desktop instead of its cloud computer. Choose Ask every time or Always allow. xAI's advice on local access: keep it off unless a task needs files or commands on the computer in front of you.
If a site asks for a login or CAPTCHA instead
That's a different problem. Take over the Bot's computer, sign in yourself, finish any two-factor step, and tell the Bot to continue. Never paste a password or code into chat.
If neither setting fits
Contact support with the site address and a screenshot of the error. Cursor says it will check whether the Bot's computer can reach it. Our example prompt to collect the details: "Try to open [site address] once. If it fails, tell me the exact error, the time, and take a screenshot. Do not retry more than once and do not reset the computer."

Ready-made use cases
- 01Price and availability watch with change alerts (you buy)
Checks public pages you name on a schedule and alerts you only when price, plan or stock materially changes. Never adds to cart or checkouts.
~1h/week · estimate - 02Weekly competitor watch
The agent tracks competitors' pricing, launches and posts and tells you what matters.
~2h/week · estimate
Example: Grok Bot setup
Grok Bot routine: Price and availability watch with change alerts (you buy) Schedule: Daily 8:00 Watch this list of public URLs I give you (label, URL, field: price/plan/stock, optional target). On each run, record the value exactly as shown. Draft an alert only if it changed or hit my target: label, old → new, URL, one line. If nothing changed, say Nothing today. Never invent prices. Never add to cart, checkout, or enter payment or account details. I buy myself. Rules: draft first, never send or post anything external without my approval. Keep summaries short.

What to approve vs automate
- Automate: reading pages that load, reporting errors.

FAQ
Why does the site work on my laptop but not for my Bot?
Your laptop uses your own connection. The Bot uses Cursor's shared network, which some sites drop.
Does routing through my computer work when my laptop is off?
It works while the Grok Bot desktop app is open.
Will Reset fix it?
No. Cursor help says to skip Update, Recover and Reset for this.
