Side income with AI agents alongside a job: realistic ideas, no hype
Updated · by Rosh Perera
Realistic side income with AI agents comes from doing small, useful jobs for real people, like setting up a drafts-first inbox or review-reply routine for a local business, not from an agent that makes money on its own. We can't tell you what you'll earn, and we'd be wary of anyone who promises a figure. These are ideas only: no income claims, no figures and no promises. Each one uses an agent for the written, repeatable part while you do the part people pay for: understanding the business and checking the work. Grok Bot facts here come from xAI's Grok Bot docs and Use cases page and Cursor's Grok Bot help, checked 20 Oct 2026. Want to see which first job fits a given business? Try our free What should my bot do? planner. We're an independent site, not part of xAI.
Pick your first 3 bots in 5 quick questions →What to hand to an agent first
Idea 1: set up one drafts-first job for a local business
Many owners want help but don't know where to start. Offer to set up one job, such as inbox triage, appointment reminders or invoice reminders, in their own accounts, drafts only. Our guide to landing your first AI automation clients covers how to find and run that first one.
Idea 2: newsletter drafts for a small business
A shop or studio that never gets its newsletter out may pay for one that arrives on time. xAI's Newsletter Writer use case "writes the issue in your voice, and parks it for review" (xAI's Use cases page). You edit, the owner approves and sends.
Idea 3: social post drafts from a business's own news
xAI's Social Media Manager use case "drafts when something noteworthy ships, parks posts for you to publish" (xAI's Use cases page). Offer drafts the owner approves and posts, never posting on their behalf without a clear yes.
Idea 4: monthly admin catch-up for freelancers you know
Receipts and expense summaries are dull and pile up. xAI's Expense Manager use case "logs new receipts from email" and builds a weekly summary (xAI's Use cases page). You hand over a tidy summary; their accountant does the accounts.
Idea 5: make a side project you already have run lighter
If you already sell something on the side, use an agent for drafted customer replies, a weekly money check and post ideas, so your evenings go further. Our Grok Bot ideas for everyday life guide has prompts for side hustlers.
What to skip
Bots sold as making money while you sleep, mass cold messages and anything that posts, pays or signs in on its own. For passwords, two-factor codes, CAPTCHAs and payment confirmations, "the Bot should hand you control of the computer" (xAI's Approvals docs). Check your employer's rules on side work and each platform's rules before you start.
Keep each client's work separate
Your Bots share one cloud computer, and files and browser sessions on it are available to every Bot; xAI's docs say "Do not use separate Bots as a security boundary." (xAI's Approvals docs). Have clients sign in to their own accounts with Take over, and set jobs up in their accounts, not yours.
Start from a template, not a blank page
xAI's Use cases page lists 56 jobs and its official Marketplace lists 90 public templates, as of 20 Oct 2026 (our Grok Bot template stats page). Our templates page has drafts-first versions with copy-ready prompts, and our free What should my bot do? planner picks a first job for a business.

Ready-made use cases
- 01Inbox triage with drafted replies
The agent sorts your inbox into reply / FYI / ignore and drafts replies in your voice for you to approve.
~5h/week · estimate - 02Appointment reminders that cut no-shows, with your OK on each day's list
Each afternoon the agent drafts reminders for tomorrow's appointments. You approve the list in one go (approve all, edit or remove), then it sends. Reschedule replies wait for your OK too. Sending without review is an optional upgrade.
~3h/week · estimate - 03Invoice chaser, with your OK on every reminder
Every Monday the agent lists unpaid invoices and drafts polite, escalating reminders. You approve each one before it sends. Sending friendly first reminders without review is an optional upgrade.
~2h/week · estimate - 04Reply to every Google (and other) review, with your OK before posting
Paste new reviews and get a short, honest reply draft in your voice. Good ones get a specific thank-you; bad ones get a calm offline fix-it offer. You post every reply yourself.
~2h/week · estimate - 05One daily list of drafts to approve
Your bots hold every email, message and post they write as a draft. Once a day (or once a week) you get one numbered list and answer approve, edit or reject for each. Nothing goes out unapproved.

Setup steps
- Pick one idea that matches a skill you already have, such as writing, admin or knowing a trade.
- Build it once for yourself or on made-up data, drafts only, so you can show it working.
- Offer it to one business or freelancer you already know.
- Set it up in their accounts, with them signing in themselves and approving every draft.
- Check in weekly, and add a second job only once they've stopped editing the drafts.
Keep these human
- No agent makes money on its own. The value is your judgment and your checking.
- Never promise a client time saved or results you can't show. Show a working draft instead.
- Keep clients' logins off your own Bot's computer.
- Personal Bots no longer have a description, so lasting rules go in chat: ask the Bot to remember them, like "From now on, ask before sending any email" (Grok Bot help: Edit a Bot).
- Never paste a password or one-time code in chat. Sign in yourself with Take over, then choose I'm done (xAI's Approvals docs).
- Start in draft mode: the agent prepares, you approve, then you loosen the leash routine by routine.

FAQ
"In your opinion, what can I do with these tools to generate real profit alongside my regular job?"
Do small, useful jobs for real people: set up a drafts-first inbox, reminder or newsletter job for a local business, or tidy admin for freelancers you know. The agent drafts; you understand the business and check the work.
How much can I make?
We don't give figures, and we'd be wary of anyone who does. It depends on who you know, what you offer and how well you do it.
Can an AI agent make money on its own?
Not in any way we'd recommend. Agents draft and organize; people still find the work, check it and own the result.
Do I need to code?
No. In Grok Bot you set up a job in chat, connect apps and add routines without code (Grok Bot help: Onboarding).
Is it OK to do this alongside my job?
Check your employer's rules on side work and each platform's rules first. Keep it to your own time and your own accounts.
Should I log into clients' accounts on my Bot?
No. Set the job up in their accounts and have them sign in themselves with Take over (xAI's Approvals docs).
