Connect Google Sheets to Grok Bot: trackers, bookkeeping sheets and what it can edit
Updated · by Rosh Perera
Owners on X this week asked their Bots to build Google Sheets to track and categorise transactions, and to keep a task tracker. Another found the Google Sheets connector a bit lacking. Both make sense once you know what the plugin does: it reads and edits cells in sheets your Google account can edit, and not much more. This guide covers connecting Sheets (and why you also want Drive), what it can and can't change, company Google accounts, a safe tracker setup, how to undo an edit, and fixes for the usual errors. Grok Bot facts come from xAI's Grok Bot docs and Cursor's Grok Bot help, and Google facts from Google's own help pages, checked 19 Oct 2026. We're an independent site, not part of xAI or Google.

Connect Sheets, and Drive too
In Grok Bot, choose Connect apps in the sidebar, search for Google Sheets and add it. When Grok Bot asks you to Authorize, finish the Google sign-in in your browser, then check that it shows under Installed (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins). Add Google Drive the same way. Finding and opening files uses the Google Drive plugin, while editing cell content uses Google Sheets (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins). Added means installed, not signed in, so if a Bot says Sheets is missing, open the plugin and choose Authenticate (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins).
What it can and can't change
The Sheets plugin lets the Bot read and edit cells in spreadsheets the connected Google account can edit. A file shared with you as Viewer stays view-only, and the plugin can't change who has access (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins). A plugin uses the account you authorize and can do only what that account can already do, so it can't raise your access or change sharing (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins). Cursor's help describes cell reading and editing. It doesn't describe formatting, charts or other sheet features, so test anything beyond cells on a copy first.
Company Google accounts
A company Google account can stop the connection before Sheets finishes signing in. Grok Bot signs in to Google as Grok, not Cursor (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins). If Google says an admin needs to review Grok, request access if the page offers it and wait for approval. Your Google admin approves Grok in the Google Admin console, under Security, Access and data control, API controls, then App access control and Manage third-party app access, and sets Grok to Trusted (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins). A personal Gmail account doesn't need an admin.
A safe tracker setup
Our suggested setup, not xAI's: make a new sheet for the Bot, or a new tab, rather than handing it your main books. Name the columns in row 1, such as Date, Description, Amount, Category and Bot notes. Then ask: "Using Google Sheets, add one row per transaction from this month's receipts to the Transactions tab. Don't change or delete existing rows." Check the rows, then let it run the same job each week as a routine. Our bookkeeping guide has the wider month-end routine.
Sheet protection probably won't stop your Bot
Google's help says sheet and range protection shouldn't be used as a security measure (Google Docs Editors Help). Because the plugin edits as your Google account, sheet protection probably won't stop your Bot. Test on a copy first, and keep a backup. To keep your main sheet safe, let the Bot work in a copy or its own tab, and add an Ask first rule for deleting or overwriting rows under Settings → General → Auto-review (xAI's Approvals docs). xAI's docs also say individual plugin tools can be enabled or disabled (xAI's Settings docs), so check the plugin under Your plugins in Connect apps if you want a read-only setup.
Undo a change with version history
In the sheet, click Last edit at the top right, choose an earlier version in the right panel, then click Restore this version. You need edit permission to browse earlier versions. Restoring clears the cell-by-cell edit history for changes made before the restore, so if you need that history, make a copy of the earlier version instead (Google Docs Editors Help). Ask the Bot to list the cells it changed at the end of each job, so you know what to check.
When it can't open or edit a sheet
If the Bot can't find the file, check that the Google Drive plugin is installed and signed in, because Drive is what finds and opens files (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins). If it can read a sheet but not edit it, the file may be shared with you as Viewer. In Google's sharing roles, a Viewer can open a file but can't edit it (Google Drive Help). Ask the owner for Editor access, or make your own copy. Not sure which spreadsheet job to start with? Our free What should my bot do? planner picks three first jobs in 5 quick questions.

Setup steps
- In Grok Bot, open Connect apps, add Google Sheets and Google Drive, and authorize both in your browser (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins).
- Check that both show under Installed and neither says Needs auth (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins).
- Make a new sheet or tab for the Bot and name the columns in row 1.
- Ask for one small job first, and tell it not to change or delete existing rows.
- Add an Ask first rule for deleting or overwriting rows under Settings → General → Auto-review (xAI's Approvals docs).
- If an edit goes wrong, use Last edit, choose an earlier version and Restore this version (Google Docs Editors Help).
Keep these human
- An installed plugin is available to every Bot on your Grok Bot account, not just the one you set it up for (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins).
- Cell edits are live as soon as they run. Start the Bot on a copy or its own tab, and add an Ask first rule for deleting or overwriting rows (xAI's Approvals docs).
- Because the plugin edits as your Google account, sheet protection probably won't stop your Bot. Test on a copy first, and keep a backup. Google also says protection shouldn't be used as a security measure (Google Docs Editors Help).
- Keep bank logins, card numbers and ID numbers out of any sheet a Bot works on.
- Start in draft mode: the agent prepares, you approve, then you loosen the leash routine by routine.

FAQ
Can Grok Bot edit Google Sheets?
Yes. With the Google Sheets plugin connected, a Bot can read and edit cells in spreadsheets the connected Google account can edit (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins).
Why can't Grok Bot edit a sheet someone shared with me?
A file shared as Viewer stays view-only, and the plugin can't change who has access (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins). Ask the owner for Editor access, or make your own copy (Google Drive Help).
Do I need the Google Drive plugin too?
Yes, if the Bot needs to find and open files. Drive searches and reads files the account can open, while Sheets edits cell content (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins).
Google says an admin needs to review Grok. What now?
Your company's Google admin needs to approve Grok in the Google Admin console and set it to Trusted. Request access if the page offers it, then try Authorize again after approval (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins).
How do I undo a change my Bot made to a sheet?
Click Last edit, choose an earlier version and click Restore this version. Restoring clears the cell-by-cell edit history before the restore, so make a copy instead if you need it (Google Docs Editors Help).
Can Grok Bot share my Google Sheet with someone?
Not through the Sheets plugin. It can't change who has access (Grok Bot help: Connect plugins).
