Grok Bot "saved credential" browser error and host service down

Updated · by Rosh Perera

If Shell and files still work, but browser tools, screenshots and secret saves fail with **"The box could not confirm that no saved credential is being filled into its browser"**, and Reset fails with a partial state, Cursor staff said a background host service on the Bot computer may never have finished its first boot (forum thread 27 Oct 2026, symptoms since 25 Oct; @Colin same day: https://forum.cursor.com/t/grok-bot-computer-host-service-down-since-oct-25-saved-credential-error-reset-fails-no-egress-ticket-t-i36143/176355). Update/Reset on your side often will not clear it; staff may need to re-provision the box. Back up workspace, skills and config yourself first - a rebuild can start empty if no snapshot exists (Colin). This is distinct from the Shell/.bashrc hang on our computer-not-working guide. Our free Grok Bot usage check is for usage burn, not this host fault. Checked 27 Oct 2026. We're an independent site, not part of xAI or Cursor.

Key points

  • Symptom split: Shell/files OK; browser, screenshots, secret saves fail (owner report + Colin, 27 Oct 2026).
  • Cause staff named: background host service never finished starting on first boot after the computer was created (Colin).
  • Your Reset/Update may fail: ("Reset failed … partial state") and leave the computer unchanged (owner report; staff treated as known issue).
  • Backup before rebuild.: Colin: if no backup of the computer appears on their side, a rebuild would most likely start empty; confirm you have copies of everything you need, including Shell-written files. Bots, chats and routines would be preserved in the staff move they offered that owner.
  • After a staff rebuild: restore your files, then re-test screenshot + one secret save before you rely on browser jobs.
  • Do not confuse with .bashrc hang: (Shell itself hung) - different guide / different fix.

What to do before and after asking for a rebuild

  • Confirm the symptom pattern

Ask for a simple Shell `echo ok` and a small file read. If those work, but screenshot/browser/secret-save fail with the saved-credential message, you are in this pattern (forum 176355).

  • Skip Reset loops

If Reset already failed with partial state, stop repeating it. Staff fixed this from the backend for the reporting owner (Colin, 27 Oct).

  • Back up yourself now

Copy `/workspace` project files, skills, and config you care about off the computer (owner confirmed full backup before rebuild). Prefer durable files in `/workspace` (xAI computer-and-apps pattern already on our computer-not-working guide).

  • Contact support with a tight packet

Account email, Grok Bot version/platform, Bot name(s), when it started, exact error text, whether Shell still works, Reset/Update results, and ticket ID if you have one (xAI troubleshooting / get-help checklist pattern). Link the forum thread if Support asks for public reports.

  • After staff re-provisions

Restore your backup. Re-test: one screenshot, one browser open, one secret save. Only then resume unattended browser routines.

  • If Shell also hangs

Use the .profile/.bashrc section on /guides/grok-bot-computer-not-working instead of this page.

Example: Grok Bot setup

Grok Bot routine: CEO morning brief in 5 minutes
Schedule: Daily 7:30

Every morning, read my calendar for today, my unread emails from the last 24h and yesterday's revenue. Send me a brief: (1) meetings with one prep note each, (2) emails that need my reply with a suggested one-line answer, (3) money in/out, (4) the 3 highest-leverage tasks for today. Keep it under 200 words.

Rules: draft first, never send or post anything external without my approval. Keep summaries short.

What should you keep in mind?

  • We do not invent a self-serve "restart host service" button. Staff did that from the backend in the cited thread.
  • Do not assume Recover/Reset will keep unsynced work if the host never became healthy (xAI: Reset restores last saved snapshot; Colin warned rebuild may start empty without backup).
  • Label ticket numbers owners paste as owner reports, not as public status incidents.

FAQ

Browser and screenshots fail with a saved-credential message, but Shell works. What is broken?

Staff: a background host service may never have finished its first boot (Colin, 27 Oct 2026, forum 176355). Back up your files and contact support for a re-provision; local Update/Reset often will not clear it.

Reset failed with partial state. Should I keep trying?

Stop looping Reset. Staff treated it as a known host-service issue and offered a fresh computer after the owner confirmed backups (Colin, 27 Oct).

Will a rebuild delete my Bots and chats?

In the staff reply on that thread, bots, chats and routines would be preserved; the computer filesystem might start empty without a snapshot (Colin). Confirm with Support for your ticket.
