Grok Bot vs OpenClaw vs Hermes Agent for a small business (Oct 2026)
Updated · by Rosh Perera
All three are AI agents that do work for you, not just chat. The big difference is who runs the computer. Grok Bot is xAI's hosted product: your Bots work on a cloud computer xAI runs (x.ai). OpenClaw is a free, open-source assistant that runs on your own computer and talks to you in chat apps you already use. The OpenClaw Foundation, an independent non-profit, looks after it (OpenClaw on GitHub). By Hermes we mean Hermes Agent, the free, open-source agent from Nous Research (Nous Research). Other software also uses the Hermes name, so check you're reading about the agent. This comparison uses only each project's own pages, checked 18 Oct 2026. All three change fast, so check before you decide. We're independent and earn nothing from any of them. For the two open-source ones head to head, see our Hermes Agent vs OpenClaw guide.
What to hand to an agent first
What each one is
Grok Bot: AI teammates you give real work to. Each Bot has a job, signs in to your tools and comes back when it needs your OK. You use it from the desktop app (macOS, Windows or Linux) or the phone app (iOS, or Android 9 or later) (xAI's FAQ). OpenClaw: an assistant on your own computer that meets you in WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, iMessage, Teams and more (OpenClaw on GitHub). Hermes Agent: an agent that remembers your work between sessions and writes its own skills from jobs it has done. You reach it on Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, email or its desktop app (Nous Research).
Who runs the computer
Grok Bot: xAI does. Every Bot shares one cloud computer, and Bots keep working when your laptop is closed (x.ai). OpenClaw: you do. Its memory and logins stay on your own hardware, and it has no paid plan and no hosted service (OpenClaw on GitHub). Hermes Agent: you do, on your own computer or a rented server. Or you can pay Nous to host it for you through Nous Portal (Nous Research). Running it yourself means you look after updates, backups and security.
Cost (list prices, 18 Oct 2026)
Grok Bot comes with xAI's Premium plan at $30 a month, Super at $100 and Ultra at $200. Each includes weekly Grok Bot usage, and extra usage is billed on token cost (x.ai). Plus and Free on The X Subscription don't include it (Grok Bot help: Plans and billing). OpenClaw and Hermes Agent are free software under the MIT license. With either one, you pay for the AI model you plug in and for any computer you keep switched on. Nous Portal, the optional Hermes subscription, lists Free ($0, free models only), Plus ($20 a month), Super ($100) and Ultra ($200), and each paid tier includes monthly credits (Nous Research). Server prices depend on what you rent, so we don't guess them.
Scheduled jobs
All three can run a job on a schedule. Grok Bot routines run on a schedule or start from events in other apps (Grok Bot 101). OpenClaw has Automations, a built-in scheduler that wakes the agent and can send the result to a chat (OpenClaw docs). Hermes Agent schedules jobs you describe in plain words, such as a daily report or briefing (Hermes Agent docs). On a computer you run yourself, a job only runs while that computer and the agent are on. Nous says tasks that need an active agent won't run while it's stopped (Nous Research).
Approvals and safety
Grok Bot: you write rules in plain words in Settings → General → Auto-review. A separate reviewer can allow, block or pass an action to you (Grok Bot 101). Email and Slack drafts wait on a card for Send or Discard, and a Bot checks with you before sending, posting, buying or deleting (Grok Bot changelog). OpenClaw: it treats incoming messages as untrusted, and unknown senders must be paired before they can message it. Tools run on your computer unless you set up a sandbox (OpenClaw on GitHub). Hermes Agent: it checks commands against a list of dangerous ones and asks you to approve a match. Scheduled jobs block those commands by default (Hermes Agent docs).
Which fits your business
Pick Grok Bot if nobody in your business wants to run a computer, and your work lives in apps like Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack or QuickBooks Online. See our connectors list. Pick OpenClaw if you, or someone you pay, is happy to run software on your own machine, and you want everything kept on your hardware and reached from WhatsApp or Telegram. Pick Hermes Agent for the same kind of self-run control with an agent that keeps memory and builds skills, with paid hosting from Nous as an option. If you're unsure, read our self-host vs hosted guide first.

The agent checks your CRM or inbox for leads that went quiet and drafts the next follow-up.

Example: Grok Bot setup
Grok Bot routine: CEO morning brief in 5 minutes Schedule: Daily 7:30 Every morning, read my calendar for today, my unread emails from the last 24h and yesterday's revenue. Send me a brief: (1) meetings with one prep note each, (2) emails that need my reply with a suggested one-line answer, (3) money in/out, (4) the 3 highest-leverage tasks for today. Keep it under 200 words. Rules: draft first, never send or post anything external without my approval. Keep summaries short.

Setup steps
- Write down the one job you most want off your plate, like a morning summary or inbox drafts.
- Decide who will run the computer. If nobody will update and back up a server, choose a hosted option: Grok Bot, or Hermes Agent hosted through Nous Portal.
- Set approvals before you connect anything. In Grok Bot, write a drafts-only rule in Settings → General → Auto-review. In OpenClaw or Hermes Agent, leave the approval prompts and sender pairing on.
- Connect only the one app the job needs. Run it drafts-only for a week.
- Count what you had to fix. Only then try a second tool on the same job, if you still want to.
Keep these human
- Running an agent yourself makes you its IT department: updates, backups and security. Don't open a self-run agent to the internet until you've read its own security guide.
- Drafts only for anything customers see, in all three. Nothing goes out in your name, gets paid for or gets deleted without your OK.
- Don't install two at once. Pick one tool, one job and one week.
- Agent work uses more than chat. On OpenClaw or Hermes Agent, set a spending cap with your model provider. On Grok Bot, set the monthly on-demand limit in Usage & Billing (Grok Bot changelog).
- This is an 18 Oct 2026 snapshot, and prices are before tax. We haven't measured any of them on a business's work, so any time saved is an estimate.
