Why isn't my Grok Bot's work good enough, and how do I fix it?

Updated · by Rosh Perera

Usually because the Bot hasn't been told what good looks like. xAI's docs say a strong request names the outcome, sources, constraints, deliverable and review point, and to "Specify the artifact and its acceptance criteria". Give each Bot one job, show it an example you're happy with, ask it to revise instead of starting again, and save the method as a skill once it's right. Checked 21 Oct 2026 against docs.x.ai. How do you get better work from a Grok Bot?

  • What owners say

User reports: one owner who launched a business with a team of Bots wrote that "the content the team was making just wasn't up to my standards" (standards report). Another said "getting copy that doesn't sound like AI slop is still the hardest part" (copy report). The steps below come from xAI's own docs.

  • One Bot, one job

xAI's docs: "Focused Bots build more useful context than one catch-all Bot." If one Bot writes your posts, answers email and does the books, split it into one Bot per job.

  • Say what finished looks like

xAI's Get started docs list what a strong request includes: the outcome, the sources, the constraints, the deliverable and the review point. For the result: "Specify the artifact and its acceptance criteria", for example a document with headings and source links, or a draft message that hasn't been sent (xAI's Files and results docs). And "Lead with the result you need, not a detailed imitation of every click." (xAI's Chat and collaboration docs).

  • Show it a good example and your voice

Our tip: paste two or three pieces you're proud of, such as past posts or emails, and say what makes them good: length, tone, words you never use. Our brief your business once guide has a voice section you can copy.

  • Revise, don't restart

xAI's docs: "Ask the Bot to revise anything that is incomplete or formatted incorrectly." "Name the lasting preference explicitly" so the next draft starts closer (xAI's Get started docs). And "Ask the Bot to revise the existing artifact instead of making disconnected copies" (xAI's Files and results docs). For work that matters, ask it to keep facts found in source systems apart from its assumptions.

  • Save it as a skill, then automate

xAI's docs: "Start with a one-time task. Make it reliable, save the method as a skill, and only then automate it." A useful skill states "How to validate the result" and what to return (xAI's Skills and routines docs). Our view: if a routine's output is weak, fix the instruction first. Our routine prompt guide shows how, and our forgets instructions guide covers rules that don't stick.

FAQ

Why is my Grok Bot's writing so generic?

Usually it has no example of your voice and no clear finished result. Give it both, and one job per Bot.

Should I start a new chat when the work is bad?

First ask it to revise the same draft and name the lasting preference. xAI suggests a thread or a new Bot when the job itself changes.

How do I make a good result repeatable?

Save the method as a skill, including how to check the result and what to return, then automate it (xAI's Skills and routines docs).

Can Grok Bot learn my standards over time?

A Bot can keep stable preferences and summaries of its work, but xAI says to correct stale assumptions directly. Tell it each lasting rule in plain words.
