Grok Bot and Xero: the Xero plugin, Xero's own MCP server and safe bookkeeping rules
Updated · by Rosh Perera
xAI's changelog names Xero as a local plugin, so search Connect apps for it, and Xero also publishes its own MCP server that AI tools can use. We haven't tested either in Grok Bot, so treat what they can do there as Unverified, and start with read-only access. Owners on X said they use a Bot for Xero reconciling, overdue invoice emails and draft bills. This guide covers what's official, how Xero's server signs in, read-only scopes, jobs that only read or draft, and what a Bot must never post or pay. Facts come from xAI's Grok Bot changelog and docs and Xero's own MCP server page, checked 20 Oct 2026. Want a pick for your exact business? Try our free What should my bot do? planner. What xAI says about Xero
xAI's changelog for 11 Oct 2026 says: "Plugins installed from chat or the web are ready on the Bot's computer, and local plugins such as Xero get the settings you entered." That's the only mention of Xero we found on xAI's or Cursor's pages, as of 20 Oct 2026. Search Connect apps for Xero, and read its screen before you add it.
Xero's own MCP server
Xero's page says: "This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server implementation for Xero." It signs in one of two ways: a custom connection with a client ID and secret for one organisation, or a bearer token. Xero says custom connections are "the recommended approach if you are integrating this into 3rd party MCP clients". A custom connection is set up in a Xero developer account.
It can write, so limit it
Xero's server lists tools that only read, such as list-invoices and list-bank-transactions, and tools that write, such as create-invoice, create-payment and create-bank-transaction. Its page says you can override the scopes it asks for with the XERO_SCOPES setting. Our suggestion is to give it read scopes only at first. We haven't tested how each tool behaves with read-only scopes.
Jobs that only read or draft
Good first jobs: a weekly list of overdue invoices with a drafted reminder for each, a monthly profit and loss summary, and a list of bank transactions that still need reconciling, with the match it would suggest. You approve every reminder and do the reconciling in Xero yourself. Our invoice chaser and monthly bookkeeping prep templates have drafts-first versions.
What a Bot must never do on its own
Never let a Bot create payments, post bank transactions, create manual journals or send invoices without you. Put each behind an Ask first rule, and keep write scopes off until a job needs them. Bookkeeping mistakes are slow to undo. Our Grok Bot approvals guide shows how to set the rules.
Keep the keys safe
Keep keys and passwords out of chat. Cursor's help says: "Don't paste secrets into chat, Shell, or ordinary files." (Grok Bot help: Store secrets securely). A client secret or bearer token opens your books, so store it as a secret and rotate it if anyone leaves.
No connection? Use an export
If neither route works yet, export a report from Xero, such as aged receivables, and attach it to the chat. Keep exports to the period you need. Files can be up to 250 MB on Grok Bot 0.70.2 or later (xAI's changelog, 14 Oct 2026). Our QuickBooks guide covers the same export route for QuickBooks.
Start from a template, not a blank page
xAI's Use cases page lists 56 jobs and its official Marketplace lists 90 public templates, as of 20 Oct 2026 (our Grok Bot template stats page). Our templates page has drafts-first versions with copy-ready prompts, and our free What should my bot do? planner picks a first job for a business.

~2h/week · estimate
Example: Grok Bot setup
Grok Bot routine: Invoice chaser, with your OK on every reminder Schedule: Mondays 9:00 Every Monday, list unpaid invoices. Draft reminders: friendly at 3 days overdue, firm at 14, final at 30. Send me one numbered list: the client, the invoice, the amount, days overdue and the message. Wait for my approval. When I reply approve all, send each reminder exactly as drafted. If I reply edit and a number, make my change and show me again. If I reply remove and a number, leave that client out this week. If I don't answer, send nothing and put the list at the top of next week's. Anything disputed, or a client asking for a payment plan, comes to me. Stop chasing an invoice as soon as it's paid. Report total outstanding. (Sending friendly first reminders without approval is an optional upgrade once you trust the wording. Firm and final reminders still wait for my OK.) Rules: draft first, never send or post anything external without my approval. Keep summaries short.

- Store the client ID and secret as secrets.
- Ask the Bot to list last month's overdue invoices as a test.
- Add Ask first rules for payments, bank transactions, journals and sending invoices.
What should a Bot never do in Xero?
- Start with read-only access. Add write scopes one job at a time.
- Payments, bank transactions, journals and sent invoices wait for your approval.
- Store the client secret or token as a secret, never in chat.
- Reconcile in Xero yourself. Let the Bot suggest, not post.
- Start in draft mode: the agent prepares, you approve, then you loosen the leash routine by routine.

FAQ
Does Grok Bot work with Xero?
xAI's changelog mentions a local Xero plugin, and Xero publishes its own MCP server. We haven't tested either in Grok Bot, so start read-only and check Connect apps.
Can Grok Bot reconcile my Xero bank account?
Let it suggest matches from a read-only list of bank transactions, and do the reconciling in Xero yourself. Don't give it write scopes for this job.
Can it chase overdue invoices?
Yes, as drafts. It can list overdue invoices and draft a reminder for each, and you approve every email before it goes.
Can it pay bills from Xero?
Don't let it. Xero's server includes a create-payment tool, so keep write scopes off and put any payment behind your approval.
Do I need a developer?
For Xero's own MCP server, you need a custom connection set up in a Xero developer account, or a bearer token. The Xero plugin in Connect apps may be simpler, but we haven't seen its setup screen.
Is there a QuickBooks version of this guide?
Yes. Our QuickBooks guide covers the official QuickBooks connector and the same read-only rules.
