Hiring someone to set up an AI agent? A buyer checklist
Updated · by Rosh Perera
Before you hire someone to set up an AI agent, get four things in writing: the job it does, the access it gets, where it stops for your approval, and a fixed quote. If a freelancer or agency can't put those on one page, you have no way to check what you bought. This checklist works whether you hire through a freelancer marketplace, an agency or a fixed-price service. We sell a fixed-price setup ourselves, described at the end, so weigh that. Grok Bot facts here come from xAI's Grok Bot docs and Cursor's Grok Bot help, checked 20 Oct 2026. Not sure which job to hand over first? Try our free What should my bot do? planner. We're an independent site, not part of xAI.
Pick your first 3 bots in 5 quick questions →What should you get in writing before you hire someone?
1. Written scope: one job, named
Ask for the workflow in one or two sentences: what starts it, what it reads, what it produces and who sees it. For example: every weekday at 7:30, read my calendar and inbox and send me one summary. "Automate my admin" can't be checked or finished. xAI's own advice fits any setup: "Start with a one-time task. Make it reliable, save the method as a skill, and only then automate it." (xAI's Skills and routines docs).
2. Access limits: which accounts, and how much
Get a list of every app the agent connects to and what it may do there. Cursor's help is plain about the ceiling: "It can do only what that account can already do in that service. It cannot raise your access, and it cannot change sharing." So connect accounts with the least access that does the job. On Grok Bot, Bots share one computer, and xAI warns: "Do not use separate Bots as a security boundary." (Grok Bot help: Connect apps, xAI's FAQ).
3. Your passwords stay with you
You sign in to each app yourself. On Grok Bot, "Passwords, two-factor codes, CAPTCHAs, and similar human-only steps use a computer takeover." (xAI's FAQ). Nobody you hire should ask you to send a password or a one-time code by email or chat.
4. Approval points: where it stops and asks
Write down which actions wait for your OK: sending, posting, booking, paying and deleting. On Grok Bot, xAI suggests you "add narrow Ask first rules for actions such as sending, publishing, deleting, purchasing, or changing production systems." (xAI's FAQ). Before you sign off, ask to see one real draft waiting for your approval. Our Grok Bot approvals guide shows where those rules live.
5. A fixed quote and a finish line
Get one price for the agreed scope, what counts as done, when it will be done and what happens if it doesn't do the job. Ask whether tax is extra. Open-ended hourly work is how a small setup turns into a long project. The AI tool's own plan is a separate cost billed by its maker; see how much an AI agent costs.
6. A handover you can run without them
Ask for the written instructions, the list of connected apps and a note on how to pause or stop it. If they hand you a Bot as a shared template, xAI warns: "The link exposes the Bot's configuration. Strip secrets and anything confidential before you share." (xAI's FAQ). You should be able to turn it off without calling anyone.
Where to hire: three common routes
Freelancer marketplaces give you the widest choice, and the checklist matters most there. Agencies add process and project management. Fixed-price setups cover one defined job for one price. Whichever you pick, send the checklist above before you pay, and compare answers, not adjectives.
Or we set one up for you
Our done-for-you setup covers one workflow. Secure checkout on Whop. After checkout you'll pick a time for your 30-min call. On the call we choose the one workflow that will help your business most. We deliver it within 7 days of the call. Your agent gets a plain-English rule: it can read, sort and write drafts, but nothing is sent, booked or deleted until you say yes. Rosh does each setup himself, booked on a first-come basis. It's $149 one-time, plus local tax where it applies, and includes the One-Person AI Business Pack. Full refund if it doesn't work: if your workflow doesn't do the job we picked on the call, reply to your receipt within 14 days of delivery for a full refund. Changed your mind before the call? Same, full refund. Prefer to do it yourself? The Grok Bot setup guide and the free Starter Kit cover the same ground.
Start from a template, not a blank page
xAI's Use cases page lists 56 jobs and its official Marketplace lists 90 public templates, as of 20 Oct 2026 (our Grok Bot template stats page). Our templates page has drafts-first versions with copy-ready prompts, and our free What should my bot do? planner picks a first job for a business.

How do you hire someone to set up an AI agent?
- Write the one job you want done in one or two sentences: what starts it, what it reads and what it produces.
- List the apps it needs and the least access that does the job.
- Write the actions that must wait for your approval: sending, posting, booking, paying and deleting.
- Send that page to two or three people and ask each for a fixed quote, a finish date and what happens if it doesn't work.
- Before you pay the final bill, see one real draft waiting for your approval and get the written handover.
What should stay with you?
- Never send anyone a password or a one-time code. Sign in to each app yourself.
- Don't pay for a setup that sends, books or pays on its own from day one. Start with drafts you approve.
- Keep prices, refunds, contracts, complaints and anything legal with you. An agent can prepare them; you decide.
- Connect only the accounts the job needs. A connected app is available to every Bot on the account (Grok Bot help: Connect apps).
- Start in draft mode: the agent prepares, you approve, then you loosen the leash routine by routine.

FAQ
How much should it cost to hire someone to set up an AI agent?
There's no standard price, and we don't publish market rates. Ask for a fixed quote for one written scope, and ask whether tax is extra. The AI tool's own plan is a separate cost billed by its maker; our how much an AI agent costs guide covers those.
What should I get in writing before I pay?
Four things: the scope (one named job), the access limits (which apps, how much access), the approval points (what waits for your OK) and a fixed quote with a finish date. Add a written handover so you can pause or stop it yourself.
Should I give them my passwords?
No. You sign in to each app yourself. On Grok Bot, passwords and two-factor codes are human-only steps that use a computer takeover (xAI's FAQ).
How long should a setup take?
It depends on the scope, so ask for a finish date in the quote and a short test on real work before handover. Our own setup of one workflow is done within 7 days after the call.
Can I set up an AI agent myself instead?
Yes. Read the Grok Bot setup guide, start from our templates page and use our planner to pick the first job. The free Starter Kit has four copy-paste agent prompts and a 7-day plan.
What does your done-for-you setup include?
