Grok Bot first-day fixes: locked out, usage gone, starting from X and bots that never ship
Updated · by Rosh Perera
Most first-day Grok Bot problems come down to five things: the wrong account, a link that can't be undone, routines that run too often, starting in the wrong place, and Bots with no finished job to do. This page answers six real questions people posted on X this week, using only xAI's Grok Bot docs and Cursor's Grok Bot help pages, checked 18 Oct 2026. Where those pages don't answer a question, we say so and point you to support. Each answer ends with the WhatShouldMyBotDo template or guide that fits. We're an independent site, not part of xAI or Cursor.

Before you start: the right account
Grok Bot uses your Cursor account, and there's no separate Grok Bot login (Grok Bot help: Sign in). Access comes from your plan: on The X Subscription it's included on Premium, Super and Ultra but not Plus or Free, and on older Cursor plans it's included on every paid individual plan and Cursor Teams (Grok Bot help: Plans and billing). If your access comes from SuperGrok or X Premium+, you link it with Link Grok Account. That link is permanent: it can't be unlinked or moved to another Cursor account, so sign in with the right Cursor account first (Grok Bot help: Link SuperGrok). Then follow our Grok Bot setup guide for your first Bot.
"Can I create the bot from X, or do I have to start in the app?"
Start in the app. Tagging @bot on X hands a post to a Bot you already have. You need a Grok account with your X account connected, Grok Bot access on that same Grok account, and at least one Bot of your own. If you have no Bot yet, @bot replies "Grok Bot isn't set up yet" with a link to x.ai/bot (xAI's Tag @bot docs). Create your first Bot in the desktop app: pick a suggested teammate or choose Create your own and give it a short name and one primary job (xAI's Get started docs), then tell it how to work in your first message and ask it to remember (Grok Bot help: Onboarding). On a phone, use the + control and choose New Bot (xAI's Mobile docs). Tagging isn't yet available for X accounts based in Australia, the UK, the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway, and tagged requests use your Grok Bot usage (xAI's Tag @bot docs). Not sure what that first job should be? Our free What should my bot do? planner picks three in 5 quick questions.
"I've had a team of Bots on my business for two months and we still haven't launched"
xAI's docs don't say a team of Bots will start or launch a business on its own. What they do say: focused Bots build more useful context than one catch-all Bot, and you add Bots when the work naturally splits into roles (xAI's Get started docs). A strong request names the outcome, the sources, the constraints, the deliverable and the point where the Bot stops for you. Start with a one-time task, make it reliable, save it as a skill and only then automate it (xAI's Skills and routines docs). If a Bot looks stuck, open its computer and look for a question, approval, login, CAPTCHA or secret request waiting on you (xAI's Troubleshooting docs). Even xAI's own write-up on running several teams of Bots calls it an experimental pattern, with a person scoping the tasks and Bots flagging when they're blocked (xAI guide: How I run multiple teams of Grok Bots). So give one Bot one finished, checkable result this week, such as a morning brief template you'd actually read. Our first week guide lays it out day by day.
"My usage was gone in under a day"
Start with your routines. Each run spends usage, and an hourly schedule, a short interval or a Slack trigger on a busy channel can use a week of usage in a day. Pause the routines you don't need, then ask the Bot to widen schedules and narrow triggers before you raise a plan or a spending limit (Grok Bot help: Routines). On the free trial, usage is a credit measured by agent steps and tokens, not by messages, so one long job can use most of it (Grok Bot help: Plans and billing). If you moved to The X Subscription, Grok Bot draws from one weekly pool shared with Cursor and the Grok apps, and usage from an old SuperGrok or X Premium+ link is replaced by that shared pool (Grok Bot help: Plans and billing). Cursor's help pages don't say whether you can switch back to your previous plan. That's a billing question for support. To see which of your routines run most, use our free Grok Bot usage planner.
"Cursor, Grok and Grok Bot won't merge into one account"
Cursor's help pages don't describe merging Cursor, Grok, Grok Bot and X accounts, and we found nothing on a Cursor credit blocking a merge. What they do describe: Grok Bot runs on your Cursor account (Grok Bot help: Sign in). A SuperGrok or X Premium+ link pairs one Cursor account with one Grok account, and neither you nor support can unlink or move it. If you see an error that the Grok account is already linked to another Cursor account, contact support with your Cursor account email and the Grok account email (Grok Bot help: Link SuperGrok). Looped sign-ins and other account-link failures can't be fixed from your side either (Grok Bot help: Sign in). So don't keep retrying the link. Write to support, and in the meantime sign in to Grok Bot with the Cursor account that holds your access. Our Grok Bot setup guide picks up from there.
"I paid on one account, and X, Grok and Grok Bot still won't connect"
Three different connections get mixed up here. First, signing in: Grok Bot runs on your Cursor account (Grok Bot help: Sign in). On The X Subscription there's nothing to link. Grok Bot is included on Premium, Super and Ultra, so sign in to Grok Bot with the same account (Grok Bot help: Plans and billing). Second, X Premium+ on an older Cursor plan: it links through Link Grok Account, signing in to Grok with the account that has X Premium+, and like a SuperGrok link it's permanent (Grok Bot help: Link SuperGrok). Third, connecting X so you can tag @bot: on grok.com, open Settings → Account and choose Connect next to 𝕏 Account, and Grok Bot access has to be on that same Grok account (xAI's Tag @bot docs). The X for Grok Bot plugin is separate and optional, and @bot forwards requests with or without it (xAI's Tag @bot docs). Grok Bot's help pages don't explain an "already unified" message, so don't keep retrying or paying again. Before you combine accounts under The X Subscription, know that it's one-way. xAI's X Subscription docs say: "A completed unification is permanent. It can't be undone, and Support can't undo it for you." If an error says the Grok account is already linked to another Cursor account, contact support with your Cursor account email and the Grok account email (Grok Bot help: Link SuperGrok). Refunds follow what you paid for: X Premium+ refunds come from X, and SuperGrok refunds follow xAI's FAQ (Grok Bot help: Plans and billing). One honest note: xAI's Get started docs say the desktop link sits under Settings → Usage & Billing, labelled with your SuperGrok tier, while Cursor's FAQ puts Link Grok Account on the Get Started page at cursor.com/bot/onboarding. We follow xAI's docs. If it isn't in Settings, try that page.
"Locked out of my Bot, and I had no backup"
Try the documented sign-in fixes first: update the app, sign out and back in, clear cache and cookies for cursor.com and x.ai, sign in again in a private window, and try signing in at x.ai/bot with the same Cursor account. If the error started recently, wait 30 to 60 minutes and retry. If it remains, support has to fix it, and a phone-verification block can only be reset by support (Grok Bot help: Sign in). Your work is probably not gone. Chats are stored separately from the Bot's computer, Bots and conversations show on every device signed in to the same account, and a Bot hidden from the sidebar keeps its history. Don't use Reset to look for missing chats (Grok Bot help: Computer recovery). On backups, we found no backup or export feature for Bots in xAI's or Cursor's pages, checked 18 Oct 2026. Grok Bot keeps a durable copy of synced computer data, but files that exist only on your own Mac or Windows machine aren't covered, so keep your own backups of those (Grok Bot help: Computer recovery). Our own habit is to keep each Bot's job and lasting rules in a doc you control. Our SOPs guide shows how.
When to contact support, and what to send
Email hi@cursor.com for support, and for billing or cancellation questions (per Cursor's help page, checked 18 Oct 2026). Include the email on your Grok Bot account, your Grok Bot version and platform, what you were trying to do, a screenshot of the error or plan screen, what you've already tried and the request ID if the menu offers Copy request ID (Grok Bot help: Get help). Go straight to support for a Grok account already linked to another Cursor account, a phone-verification block, a sign-in loop, Bots or chats missing on every device, or a Recover or Reset that fails after one retry (Grok Bot help: Sign in, Link SuperGrok, Computer recovery). Never send passwords, one-time codes, private keys or secret values (xAI's Troubleshooting docs).
How often should each kind of bot check?
Do the sums before you pick a schedule. Every 5 minutes is 288 runs a day, or 8,640 in a 30-day month. Hourly is 24 a day, or 720 a month. Each run spends usage (Grok Bot help: Routines), and xAI's docs give no cost per run, so we don't either. Schedules must be at least five minutes apart (xAI's Skills and routines docs). Our own templates check far less often. Inbox triage runs twice a day, about 60 runs a month. The morning brief, lead follow-up, review requests and appointment reminders run once a day, 30 a month. Prospect research and the daily approval list run on weekdays, 20 to 22 a month. The invoice chaser and the weekly review run once a week, 4 or 5 a month, and bookkeeping prep runs once a month. Missed-call text-back and FAQ replies run when something arrives, so keep those triggers narrow. Start on these schedules, then tighten one only if you're missing something. Our routine templates have the prompts.

Setup steps
- Check that your plan includes Grok Bot, then sign in with the Cursor account you mean to use (Grok Bot help: Plans and billing).
- If your access comes from SuperGrok or X Premium+, confirm the Cursor account before you choose Link Grok Account, because the link is permanent (Grok Bot help: Link SuperGrok).
- Create one Bot in the app with a short name and one primary job (xAI's Get started docs), and tell it in your first message what to do and when to ask you (Grok Bot help: Onboarding).
- Give it one one-time task that names the outcome, sources, constraints, deliverable and review point, and fix it until the result is right (xAI's Get started docs).
- Save it as a skill and make it a routine on the least frequent schedule that works. Press Test with a safe input (xAI's Skills and routines docs).
- After the first day, check weekly usage in Settings, Usage & Billing (xAI's Settings docs). If it's dropping fast, widen schedules before you add anything new.
Keep these human
- Never paste a password or verification code into chat. When a site needs a login, take over the computer and sign in yourself (xAI's Troubleshooting docs).
- Use Reset only after Retry, a restart, Update and Recover have failed. It restores the last saved snapshot and can lose recent work (xAI's Troubleshooting docs).
- Check which Cursor account you're signed in to before you choose Link Grok Account. Neither you nor support can move the link later (Grok Bot help: Link SuperGrok).
- A test run does real work. It can navigate websites, change files and call connected tools, so test with safe inputs (xAI's Skills and routines docs).
- Keep anything that sends, publishes or spends money on your approval while you're still fixing first-day problems.
- Start in draft mode: the agent prepares, you approve, then you loosen the leash routine by routine.

FAQ
Can I create a Grok Bot from X?
No. Create your first Bot in the Grok Bot desktop or phone app. Tagging @bot on X hands a post to a Bot you already have, and it needs your X account connected to a Grok account with Grok Bot access. With no Bot of your own, @bot replies that Grok Bot isn't set up yet (xAI's Tag @bot docs).
Why did my Grok Bot usage run out in a day?
Usually routines. Each run spends usage, and an hourly schedule, a short interval or a busy Slack trigger can use a week of usage in a day (Grok Bot help: Routines). Pause what you don't need and widen schedules. On The X Subscription, Grok Bot also shares one weekly pool with Cursor and the Grok apps (Grok Bot help: Plans and billing).
Is checking every 5 minutes too often?
For most small-business jobs, yes. Every 5 minutes is 288 runs a day, or 8,640 in a 30-day month, and each run spends usage (Grok Bot help: Routines). Our templates run inbox triage twice a day and most other jobs once a day or once a week.
Can I merge my Cursor, Grok and X accounts for Grok Bot?
Cursor's help pages don't describe a merge. Grok Bot runs on your Cursor account, and a SuperGrok or X Premium+ link to a Grok account is permanent. If the Grok account is already linked to another Cursor account, contact support with both emails (Grok Bot help: Link SuperGrok).
Why won't my X account link to Grok Bot?
It depends which link you mean. On The X Subscription (Premium, Super or Ultra) there's nothing to link: sign in to Grok Bot with the same account (Grok Bot help: Plans and billing). X Premium+ on an older Cursor plan links through Link Grok Account, and that link is permanent (Grok Bot help: Link SuperGrok). To tag @bot, connect X on grok.com under Settings → Account (xAI's Tag @bot docs). For an "already linked" error, contact support with both account emails.
How do I back up my Grok Bot?
We found no backup or export feature for Bots in xAI's or Cursor's pages, checked 18 Oct 2026. Chats are stored separately from the Bot's computer, and synced computer data has a durable copy. Files kept only on your own computer aren't covered (Grok Bot help: Computer recovery). Keep each Bot's job and lasting rules in a doc you control.
How do I contact Grok Bot support?
Email hi@cursor.com (per Cursor's help page, checked 18 Oct 2026). Include your account email, Grok Bot version and platform, what you tried, a screenshot and the request ID if one is shown (Grok Bot help: Get help). Never include passwords or codes.
