Which AI model does Grok Bot use? What Cursor and xAI say, and what it means for you
Updated · by Rosh Perera
Owners asked on X this week which model Grok Bot is using, whether they can control it, and whether it matters. This guide sticks to what Cursor and xAI say officially: how Grok Bot picks a model, whether you can choose or see it, what it means for cost and your data, how it works with team model settings, and what to do when a reply fails with Model provider is overloaded. We don't guess at which model handled any task. Facts come from Cursor's Grok Bot help and security page and xAI's Grok Bot docs, checked 19 Oct 2026. We're an independent site, not part of xAI or Cursor.

Grok Bot isn't one model
Cursor's help says: "Grok Bot is not tied to a single model. For each task, it uses the backend model most likely to deliver the best outcome." That can be a first-party xAI model or a third-party model from a provider on the sub-processor list, and the choice can differ from one request to the next (Grok Bot help: Models). xAI's docs add that the serving mix can change over time with no fixed vendor set guaranteed (xAI's Grok Bot security docs).
You can't pick the model
Grok Bot has no per-user or per-request model selection, and there's no model picker in Grok Bot settings. You can't be routed to or away from a particular model (Grok Bot help: Models). xAI's docs say the same: Cursor manages model selection, and there's no customer-facing model picker (xAI's Grok Bot security docs). Asking the Bot which model it is won't change that.
Can you see which model answered?
xAI's security docs say usage analytics show the model that served each request, including failovers (xAI's Grok Bot security docs). Cursor's help says the opposite: Grok Bot doesn't show the underlying model, and usage views record it as Grok Bot usage, not by provider or model name (Grok Bot help: Models). The pages don't agree, so we follow xAI's docs, but don't be surprised if your usage view shows only Grok Bot usage.
What it means for cost
xAI's docs say billing follows the serving model (xAI's Grok Bot security docs). Cursor's help says the cost per token doesn't change based on which model handles a task, and that how fast you use your allowance depends on the kind of work and how much effort each task takes (Grok Bot help: Models). Whichever way it's counted, the practical check is the same: open Settings > Usage & Billing in Grok Bot to see where your usage went (Grok Bot help: Models). Our usage limits guide covers keeping routines inside your weekly allowance.
What it means for your data
Grok Bot only uses third-party providers on Cursor's sub-processor list, and Cursor calls that list the authoritative reference for which providers may process your data (Grok Bot help: Models, Cursor's sub-processor list). xAI's docs say that with Privacy Mode on, customer data isn't used for training, and model providers don't keep prompts or outputs, though providers may run abuse and safety classifiers and flagged data may be stored for investigation (xAI's Grok Bot security docs). If a client contract limits which subprocessors can handle your data, contact your account team before rolling out Grok Bot (xAI's Grok Bot security docs).
Teams and model allowlists
xAI's docs say the team model allowlist is Enterprise only and enforcement isn't guaranteed: the list is honoured by default, but onboarding shows an acknowledgement that Grok Bot may not follow it, so treat enforcement as configuration dependent (xAI's Grok Bot security docs). Cursor's help and Cursor's security page say Grok Bot isn't governed by a team's Cursor model allowlist (Grok Bot help: Models, Cursor's Grok Bot security page). We follow xAI's docs here, and either way, don't rely on an allowlist to keep Grok Bot off a model.
When it says Model provider is overloaded
If a reply fails with Model provider is overloaded, wait a moment and send the message again. If the Bot still doesn't reply, fully quit and reopen Grok Bot, and contact support if it keeps happening (Grok Bot help: FAQs). Grok Bot is also a different app from Grok, xAI's chat app, so a limit or paywall in the Grok app isn't about Grok Bot (Grok Bot help: FAQs). Since you can't pick the model, judge each Bot by the work it hands back. Not sure which jobs to test it on? Our free What should my bot do? planner picks three in 5 quick questions.

Setup steps
- Accept that Grok Bot picks the model per task, and there's no picker to set (Grok Bot help: Models).
- Open Settings > Usage & Billing in Grok Bot to see where your usage goes (Grok Bot help: Models).
- Read Cursor's sub-processor list if clients ask which providers can process their data (Grok Bot help: Models).
- On a team, check your Privacy Mode setting and don't rely on a model allowlist (xAI's Grok Bot security docs).
- If a reply fails with Model provider is overloaded, wait a moment and send it again (Grok Bot help: FAQs).
- Judge each Bot by its results on one real job a week.
Keep these human
- Don't plan around a particular model. Cursor says the choice can differ from one request to the next, and xAI says no fixed vendor set is guaranteed (Grok Bot help: Models, xAI's Grok Bot security docs).
- Don't rely on a team model allowlist to control Grok Bot. xAI says enforcement isn't guaranteed (xAI's Grok Bot security docs).
- Check Cursor's sub-processor list before you promise a client which providers can see their data (Grok Bot help: Models).
- Watch Settings > Usage & Billing in your first weeks, because usage depends on the kind of work and effort each task takes (Grok Bot help: Models).
- Start in draft mode: the agent prepares, you approve, then you loosen the leash routine by routine.

FAQ
Which AI model does Grok Bot use?
It isn't tied to one model. For each task it uses the model most likely to deliver the best outcome, either a first-party xAI model or a third-party model from a provider on the sub-processor list (Grok Bot help: Models).
Can I choose the model in Grok Bot?
No. There's no model picker and no per-user or per-request model selection, and you can't be routed to or away from a particular model (Grok Bot help: Models).
Can I see which model handled my request?
xAI's security docs say usage analytics show the serving model. Cursor's help says Grok Bot doesn't show it and records usage as Grok Bot usage. We follow xAI's docs, but your view may show only Grok Bot usage.
Does it cost more when Grok Bot uses a different model?
Cursor's help says the cost per token doesn't change based on which model handles a task. xAI's docs say billing follows the serving model. Check Settings > Usage & Billing to see your usage (Grok Bot help: Models).
What does Model provider is overloaded mean in Grok Bot?
Wait a moment and send the message again. If it still doesn't reply, fully quit and reopen Grok Bot, and contact support if it keeps happening (Grok Bot help: FAQs).
Is Grok Bot the same as the Grok app?
No. Grok, xAI's chat app, and Grok Bot are two different apps, and a limit in the Grok app isn't about Grok Bot (Grok Bot help: FAQs).
