Can Grok Bot reach your private network? Tailscale, VPNs and your desktop

Yes, in two official ways. xAI's docs say you can "route traffic through a member's desktop or install your organization's networking client on every team computer through Team Setup." and "Tailscale and Cloudflare Tunnel are common client choices". The desktop route is a setting in the app; Team Setup is for Enterprise plans only.

How can a Bot reach systems on your private network?

  • Why a Bot can't see your network by default

    "Grok Bot computers run in Cursor's cloud and reach the internet through shared static egress IP addresses." (xAI's Private networks docs). Your NAS, office server or staging site isn't on that network, so the Bot can't reach it until you open a path.

  • Option A: route through your desktop

    In the Grok Bot desktop app, open Settings, Computer, Network and turn on "Route traffic through this computer". "The route uses the current device's network and IP address." It stops when you turn the setting off, or when an Enterprise admin disables it for the team (xAI's Private networks docs).

  • Option B, Enterprise: Team Setup with Tailscale or Cloudflare Tunnel

    "Team Setup is Enterprise only." "It does not appear on other plans." An admin adds a setup script that installs the networking client on every team computer. xAI notes this is a pattern you run: you own installing, configuring and authenticating the client (xAI's Private networks docs).

  • What breaks the connection

    With Option A, the route uses that desktop's network, and it stops when the setting is turned off. For Team Setup, xAI lists a case to watch: "The computer was recreated, for example after an image update or reset, and the session did not survive. Authenticate again." xAI's troubleshooting list also covers blocked vendor endpoints and an exit node that isn't approved in your tailnet.

  • Safety

    "Keep credentials out of setup scripts"; store them as a Team Secret instead (xAI's Private networks docs). Never paste an auth key in chat. Give the Bot's computers the narrowest access rules your network tool allows.

On Enterprise, yes: xAI's docs name Tailscale and Cloudflare Tunnel as common choices for Team Setup, which installs the client on every team computer.

How do I let Grok Bot reach my home or office network?

Turn on Route traffic through this computer in the desktop app, under Settings, Computer, Network. Traffic then uses that device's network and IP address.

Is Team Setup on every plan?
