Grok Bot and The X Subscription: should you switch, and how cancelling and refunds work

Updated · by Rosh Perera

Since The X Subscription launched on 12 Oct, owners have posted that they're confused about whether to switch, that a link to Grok Bot didn't go through, and that they were charged twice. Others asked how to cancel Grok Bot or its free trial before they're billed. This guide covers whether you have to switch, why the switch is permanent, what happens to your old plans and refunds, App Store and Google Play catches, usage after switching, and how cancelling and the free trial work. For prices and which plan to pick, see our pricing guide. Facts come from xAI's X Subscription docs and Cursor's Grok Bot help, checked 19 Oct 2026. We're an independent site, not part of xAI or X.

What to hand to an agent first

  • Do you have to switch?

No. xAI's docs say: "Switching is optional. If you don't switch, your current plan continues unless you change or cancel it" (xAI: Do I have to switch?). New customers start on The X Subscription (xAI: Eligibility). Under The X Subscription, Grok Bot is included on Premium, Super and Ultra. The Plus plan doesn't include Grok Bot (xAI: Grok Bot on The X Subscription). Our pricing guide has the prices for each plan.

  • The switch is permanent

A completed unification is permanent. It can't be undone, and Support can't undo it for you (xAI: Unify accounts). Cancelling The X Subscription later doesn't separate the accounts or restore your previous Cursor, SuperGrok or X Premium subscriptions (xAI: Cancel your subscription). The email addresses on your accounts don't need to match, so sign in to the exact Cursor, Grok and X accounts you want to combine and check each one before you confirm. Keep work and personal accounts separate unless you mean to combine them. If the wrong account appears, stop before checkout and contact Support (xAI: Unify accounts).

  • How to switch

If you already pay for Cursor, Grok or X, switch on the web at cursor.com/unify, accounts.x.ai/unify or on x.com. For now the phone apps send you to the web to switch (xAI: Unify accounts). Starting from X doesn't include Cursor, so if you have a paid Cursor plan, start from Cursor. Teams start at cursor.com/unify/team, and a Cursor team owner or admin starts the switch (xAI: Unify accounts, xAI: Eligibility). Choose Premium or higher if you want Grok Bot (xAI: Grok Bot on The X Subscription).

  • What happens to your old plans and refunds

When you switch, your old Cursor, Grok and X Premium subscriptions are cancelled automatically (xAI: Unify accounts). Any refund is based on the time left in the billing period, and goes back to the original payment method. It isn't added as credit to The X Subscription (xAI: Invoices & Refunds). Subscriptions on accounts that aren't part of the switch don't change, so cancel them separately if needed (xAI: Invoices & Refunds). Gifted X Premium and Apple Family Sharing aren't cancelled or refunded (xAI: Unify accounts).

  • App Store and Google Play catches

If you pay for Cursor through the Apple App Store, xAI can't cancel or refund it. Cancel it in your iPhone or iPad Settings, or Apple keeps billing you, so you could be billed twice (xAI: App Store subscriptions). Grok, Grok Bot and X Premium bought through the App Store are cancelled when you switch, and xAI asks Apple to refund the unused time. Apple decides on the refund (xAI: Invoices & Refunds). If you bought Grok, Grok Bot or X Premium through Google Play, check your subscriptions in Google Play after you switch, and cancel it there if it's still set to renew (xAI: Invoices & Refunds).

  • Usage after you switch

Under The X Subscription, Grok Bot usage draws from a weekly pool shared across Grok, Grok Bot and Cursor (xAI: Grok Bot on The X Subscription). Third-party models change too. On a legacy Cursor plan, they draw from an included Other Models pool, "drawn down at each model's API price" (Cursor docs: Legacy Cursor plans). About switching, the same page says: "It also drops the included third-party model allowance; third-party models are billed separately." On Premium and above, Claude, GPT, Gemini and other third-party models stay available at API list price, paid from prepaid credit (Cursor docs: Models and pricing). A SuperGrok or X Premium+ link isn't part of The X Subscription, so after you switch from a plan that used a link, Grok Bot usage comes from the shared pool (Grok Bot help: Plans and billing). On team plans, each paid seat has its own weekly pool (xAI: Usage limits). If your usage still looks split after you switch, or a charge looks wrong, contact Support from your billing dashboard (xAI: Invoices & Refunds). xAI's docs don't give a timeframe for this, so we won't guess one.

  • Cancelling, free trials and refunds

To cancel a plan billed on the web, go to Billing & invoices on your grok.com dashboard and follow the prompts. If you subscribed on X, cancel in X, and through Google Play, cancel in Google Play. A separate Apple-billed Cursor plan is cancelled through Apple (xAI: Cancel your subscription). The Grok Bot free trial is a usage credit with a 7-day window, it never becomes a paid plan, and used trial credit isn't restored. Cancel Trial ends it right away, removes any remaining credit, and you can't claim it again. An App Store intro offer is different: Apple runs it, and it turns into a paid Apple subscription unless you cancel first (Grok Bot help: Plans and billing). Cursor can't cancel or refund store purchases (Grok Bot help: FAQs). Once your plan is sorted, our free What should my bot do? planner picks three first jobs in 5 quick questions.

Setup steps

  1. Decide whether to switch at all. If you don't, your current plan continues (xAI: Do I have to switch?).
  2. List every Cursor, Grok and X account you pay for, and how each is billed: web, App Store or Google Play.
  3. Switch on the web at cursor.com/unify, accounts.x.ai/unify or x.com, and check each account before you confirm (xAI: Unify accounts).
  4. Pick Premium or higher if you want Grok Bot (xAI: Grok Bot on The X Subscription).
  5. Cancel any Apple-billed Cursor plan in your iPhone or iPad Settings, and check Google Play (xAI: Invoices & Refunds).
  6. Check your usage and charges in your billing dashboard, and contact Support if something looks wrong (xAI: Invoices & Refunds).

Keep these human

  • A completed switch is permanent, and Support can't undo it. Check every account before you confirm (xAI: Do I have to switch?, xAI: Unify accounts).
  • If you use Claude, GPT or Gemini in Cursor, check what they'll cost before you switch. The X Subscription has no included third-party allowance, and the switch can't be undone (Cursor docs: Legacy Cursor plans, xAI: Unify accounts).
  • An Apple-billed Cursor plan isn't cancelled when you switch. Cancel it in your iPhone or iPad Settings, or you could be billed twice (xAI: App Store subscriptions).
  • Refunds go back to the original payment method, not to credit, and Apple decides on refunds for App Store purchases (xAI: Invoices & Refunds).
  • Cancel Trial ends the free trial right away and you can't claim it again. Used trial credit isn't restored (Grok Bot help: Plans and billing).
  • Start in draft mode: the agent prepares, you approve, then you loosen the leash routine by routine.

FAQ

Do I have to switch to The X Subscription to keep Grok Bot?

No. Switching is optional. If you don't switch, your current plan continues unless you change or cancel it (xAI: Do I have to switch?).

Can I undo the switch to The X Subscription?

No. A completed unification is permanent, and Support can't undo it. Cancelling later doesn't restore your old Cursor, SuperGrok or X Premium plans (xAI: Unify accounts, xAI: Cancel your subscription).

Will I keep my included Claude or GPT usage after switching?

No. Cursor's pricing page says: "Premium and above include generous usage of Grok models but do not include an allowance for third-party models." Third-party models stay available in Cursor at API list price, paid from prepaid credit (cursor.com/pricing, Cursor docs: Legacy Cursor plans).

Will I get a refund for my old plan when I switch?

Old subscriptions in the switch are cancelled, and any refund is based on the time left in the billing period. It goes back to the original payment method, not to credit (xAI: Invoices & Refunds).

Why was I charged twice after switching?

If you paid for Cursor through the App Store, xAI can't cancel it, and Apple keeps billing until you cancel it in Settings (xAI: App Store subscriptions). Otherwise, contact Support from your billing dashboard (xAI: Invoices & Refunds).

Does the Plus plan include Grok Bot?

No. Under The X Subscription, Grok Bot is included on Premium, Super and Ultra. Plus doesn't include it (xAI: Grok Bot on The X Subscription).

How do I cancel the Grok Bot free trial?

Can I get a refund for Grok Bot bought in the iPhone or Android app?

Apple or Google handles it. Cursor can't cancel or refund store purchases (Grok Bot help: FAQs).
