Back up your Grok Bot: save its rules, skills, routines and memory every week

Updated · by Rosh Perera

We found no export button for a Grok Bot's setup in xAI's docs or Cursor's help, so the backup that works is one you make yourself: a weekly routine where each Bot that matters writes out its lasting rules, what it remembers, its routines and your saved skills, and uploads that to a Google Drive folder you own. Some of this is easy to lose. xAI's docs say "Deleting a routine is immediate and has no undo.", and Cursor's help says deleting your account removes your Grok Bot agents, chats, computers and connected apps. One owner on X who runs bots for 4 companies put it this way (a user report): a routine learned in one take is gold "until the account it lives on suddenly gets deleted". This guide covers what a backup has to hold, the exact message to send, how to check it, and how to rebuild. Grok Bot facts come from xAI's Grok Bot docs and changelog and Cursor's Grok Bot help, checked 20 Oct 2026. Files on the Bot's computer are a separate job, covered in our computer rolled back guide. We're an independent site, not part of xAI.

How do you back up a Grok Bot?

  • What a backup has to hold

Four things make a Bot yours. Its lasting rules: Cursor's help says "The Bot keeps lasting rules in its memory." Its memory: xAI's docs say a Bot "can retain stable working preferences, important facts, and summaries from its work." Your skills: "A skill is a reusable set of instructions for how to do a task." and "Private skills are one library shared by all your Bots." Its routines: each one has an Instruction and a When to run schedule in the Bot's details (Grok Bot help: Routines). Sign-ins and connected apps can't go in a document, and passwords never should.

  • Is there an export button?

Not that we could find. As of 20 Oct 2026, xAI's Grok Bot docs and Cursor's Grok Bot help don't describe a way to export a Bot's memory, skills or routines as a file, and they don't say whether support can bring them back after an account is deleted. Cursor's help says deleting the account is "self-serve and permanent" and "All data is removed within 30 days." The nearest built-in option is a template. A Bot's Share menu has Create template, and the link shows "its identity, description, skills, and routines" (xAI's Bots docs). xAI's docs don't list memory in a template or say what happens to the link if your account goes, and outside Enterprise the default is a public link anyone who has it can open. So treat the Drive document as your real copy.

  • Before you start: connect Google Drive

Open Connect apps in the sidebar, add Google Drive and finish the sign-in in your browser (Grok Bot help: Connect apps). Step by step help is in our connect Google Drive guide. xAI's changelog says "Bots can upload files to Google Drive or OneDrive, or attach them to a Gmail draft." A connected app can only do what that Google account can already do. Make a folder called Grok Bot backups that only you can open. Cursor's help doesn't say whether a Bot can edit a Google Doc in place, so the message below asks for a new dated file each week, which also keeps every past copy.

  • The message to send each Bot

xAI's docs don't say one Bot can read another Bot's memory or routines, so send this to each Bot you'd hate to lose, in its own chat: "Every Sunday at 6:00 PM, write a backup of your own setup: your name and job, your lasting rules, what you remember about me and my business, each of your routines with its exact instruction and when it runs, and every saved skill with its full instructions. Leave out passwords, keys, codes and customer data. Save it as one document named with your name, the word backup and today's date, upload it to my Google Drive folder Grok Bot backups, and post the file name here. Only add new files. Never delete or overwrite anything in Drive. If you can't read something, list it under Couldn't back up instead of guessing." Then open the routine and check When to run shows the time you meant, use Test once, and open the file in Drive (Grok Bot help: Routines). Each run spends usage, so weekly is plenty.

  • Check the first backup by hand

Compare the file with the Bot's details: each routine there shows its Instruction and When to run (Grok Bot help: Routines). For skills, open Connect apps → Your plugins → Manage plugins and skills and check the list under Private skills (xAI's Skills and routines docs). If the memory part looks short, that's expected: xAI describes memory as preferences, facts and summaries, not every message. Correct anything stale in chat, as xAI's docs suggest.

  • How to rebuild from the backup

Create a Bot, give it the job from the file, paste its lasting rules and ask it to remember them (Grok Bot help: Edit a Bot). Paste each skill and ask it to save it as a skill. Then paste each routine's instruction and schedule, and use Test before you rely on it, because "A test run performs real work." (xAI's Skills and routines docs). Add your apps again from Connect apps and sign in to websites again yourself.

  • A duplicate is not a backup

Duplicating a Bot copies "the profile, settings, enabled skills, routines, and avatar", but "It does not copy conversation history, learned memory, or chat attachments." (xAI's Bots docs). The copy also sits on the same account, so it won't help if that account is lost. If you're tidying up rather than leaving, xAI's docs say "If you may need the work later, hide the Bot instead."

Grok Bot routine: Weekly CEO review & plan
Schedule: Fridays 16:00

Every Friday, summarize this week: revenue and key metrics vs last week, what shipped, what's stuck, and open loops. Propose the top 3 priorities for next week and one thing I should stop doing. Format as a short memo.

Rules: draft first, never send or post anything external without my approval. Keep summaries short.

Set up a weekly backup

  1. Add Google Drive in Connect apps and finish the sign-in.
  2. Make a Drive folder called Grok Bot backups that only you can open.
  3. Send the backup message to each Bot you'd hate to lose.
  4. Check When to run, then use Test once and open the file it uploads.
  5. Once a month, compare the latest file with each Bot's Routines list.

What to keep out of a backup

  • Keep passwords, API keys, one-time codes and customer data out of the backup file. Save secrets with the secure secret card instead (Grok Bot help: Store secrets securely).
  • Deleting a routine can't be undone, and deleting a Bot also removes the routines it owns (xAI's Skills and routines docs). Back up before you delete.
  • Keep the backup routine add-only: it uploads new files and never deletes or overwrites anything in Drive. Keep deleting behind your approval (xAI's Skills and routines docs).

FAQ

Can I export my Grok Bot's memory, skills or routines?

We found no export option in xAI's docs or Cursor's help as of 20 Oct 2026. Ask each Bot to write them out and upload the file to Google Drive on a weekly routine.

Does deleting my account delete my Bots and routines?

Yes. Cursor's help says deleting your account removes Grok Bot agents, chats, computers and connected apps, and all data is removed within 30 days.

Is duplicating a Bot a backup?

No. A duplicate doesn't copy learned memory or conversation history, and it lives on the same account (xAI's Bots docs).

Does the backup include my logins?

No, and it shouldn't. Sign-ins live in the browser on the Bot's computer. After a rebuild, sign in again yourself with Take over (xAI's Computer and apps docs).

How is this different from backing up the Bot's files?

This guide saves the setup: rules, memory, skills and routines. Project files on the Bot's computer are covered in our computer rolled back guide.
