Grok Bot Gmail authentication: fix sign-in problems
Updated · by Rosh Perera
If Grok Bot's Gmail sign-in fails, start a fresh sign-in from the connector card (Reopen or Retry), close old sign-in tabs, and check the card shows the Google account you meant. Work accounts may also need your Google admin to allow the app. When it fails, your Bot can't see your inbox, and any routine that uses Gmail stops. This page is for fixing that. If you haven't connected Gmail yet, start with our Gmail guide. The checks below use only what xAI's Grok Bot changelog and Google's own help pages say, checked 18 Oct 2026. Anything else is a check to try, not a known fix. We're an independent site, not part of xAI.

What to hand to an agent first
Start a fresh sign-in
If a sign-in failed or its link expired, Grok Bot now shows why, and Reopen or Retry starts a fresh one (Grok Bot changelog). Sign-in also stops waiting after five minutes, so you can try again. Close old sign-in tabs in your browser, then start once more from the card.
Check it's the right Google account
Connected Google accounts show their email address on connector cards (Grok Bot changelog). Make sure it's the account you use for work. To add a second account, the card offers Authorize for that account. You can connect more than one account per service (Grok Bot 101).
Sign in again when the card asks
When a change needs a fresh sign-in, the connector card shows Authorize instead of Added (Grok Bot changelog). Click it and finish in your browser. If the Bot asked you to connect in the middle of a job, it carries on by itself once you finish signing in (Grok Bot changelog).
Work email? Ask your admin
If your Gmail is a work account run by a Google Workspace admin, that admin controls which outside apps can reach your company's Google data (Google Workspace Admin Help). If Google won't let the sign-in finish, ask your admin to allow it. Don't get around it by using a personal account for company email.
Update Grok Bot
Many Gmail fixes are recent. Gmail actions fail less often, Bots wait when Google asks apps to slow down, and Bots no longer sign you out of a connector while repairing it (Grok Bot changelog). Automatic Updates is on by default. If you turned it off, check Settings > Updates. If a Gmail routine still won't run, see our routines guide.

Setup steps
- Open Connect apps in the sidebar and find Gmail. Look at which email address it shows.
- If it shows Authorize, click it. Sign in to the right Google account in the browser window that opens.
- If the sign-in page says it failed or the link expired, press Reopen or Retry for a fresh one.
- If Google says your organisation doesn't allow the app, stop and ask your Google Workspace admin.
- Test it. Ask your Bot to draft a reply to your newest email. Check the draft card, then press Discard.
Keep these human
- Only type your Google password on Google's own sign-in screen. Google says not to share your Google password with an outside app (Google Account Help).
- Read Google's screen before you agree. Google's own list shows that the permission to write drafts also lets an app send email (Gmail permissions list, Google). So keep the drafts-only rule in Settings → General → Auto-review (xAI's Approvals docs).
- If you remove the Bot's access in your Google account, Gmail stays disconnected until you sign in again. Google's third-party connections page shows each app and lets you remove it (Google Account Help).
- A connector account you sign out of stays signed out (Grok Bot changelog). If you signed out on purpose, you need to authorize again.
- Don't switch drafts off to fix a sending problem. Gmail draft cards say Couldn't send this draft when Send doesn't go through (Grok Bot changelog). Read the card, fix the cause, then press Send yourself.

FAQ
What does Gmail authentication mean in Grok Bot?
It means signing in to Google and agreeing to let your Bot use Gmail. You do it on Google's own screen. Grok Bot never needs your Google password.
Why does Grok Bot keep asking me to sign in to Gmail?
The connector card shows Authorize when a change needs a fresh sign-in, or when you add a second account (Grok Bot changelog). It can also happen if the Bot's access was removed in your Google account. Sign in once more. If it keeps happening, update Grok Bot and check Google's third-party connections page.
Sign-in worked, but the Bot says it couldn't send. Why?
Gmail drafts retry through Google's short-term limits and say if they still couldn't send (Grok Bot changelog). If you have more than one address, the Bot asks which one to use. Check the From address on the draft card, then try Send again yourself.
Is there a separate Grok Bot Gmail setup guide?
Yes. Our Gmail guide covers first-time setup and the drafts-only rule. This page is only for fixing sign-in problems.
Can someone set this up for me?
Our free Starter Kit has four copy-paste agent prompts, including inbox drafts. The One-Person AI Business Pack ($29 one-time, plus local tax where it applies) adds a guardrail block with escalation rules and a 7-day install plan, and the pack page offers a done-for-you setup of one workflow ($149 one-time, plus local tax where it applies).
