AI agent vs MCP: what's the difference, and why your Bot needs connectors

Updated · by Rosh Perera

An agent is the worker; MCP is a plug standard it uses to reach your apps. The MCP docs call it "an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems." (MCP docs: Introduction). In Grok Bot, connectors do this: "Connectors give a Bot a structured way to work with supported services." (xAI's Computer and apps docs).

How do agents, connectors and MCP fit together?

  • Definitions

MCP: "MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open-source standard for connecting AI applications to external systems." and "Think of MCP like a USB-C port for AI applications." (MCP docs: Introduction). Agent: software that pursues goals and completes tasks for you, using tools like these.

  • Agent, connector, MCP server, skill

The agent is the Bot. A connector is how it reaches an app, and hosted connectors run as MCP calls. A skill is a saved way of doing a task. In short: the Bot follows a skill and uses a connector to talk to your app.

  • Where MCP shows up in Grok Bot

xAI's Teams and Enterprises docs: "Tool I/O covers hosted connector calls only: MCP calls Cursor runs, such as Jira, Slack, and Linear." Connectors are installed from Connect apps, and "Installed connectors are account-wide." (xAI's Computer and apps docs).

  • Connector or the Bot's browser?

Use a connector when one exists; xAI says it is often more reliable than clicking through a website. "Use the browser for services without a connector or for visual workflows a connector does not expose." (xAI's Computer and apps docs). Our connector checker shows what's available for your apps.

  • Safety: what a connector can do

A connector acts in your account with the access you grant. Connect only what a workflow needs, and keep sending, deleting and changing permissions behind your approval (xAI's Approvals docs).

Ready-made use cases

  1. 01Inbox triage with drafted replies
The agent sorts your inbox into reply / FYI / ignore and drafts replies in your voice for you to approve.
    ~5h/week · estimate
  2. 02One daily list of drafts to approve
Your bots hold every email, message and post they write as a draft. Once a day (or once a week) you get one numbered list and answer approve, edit or reject for each. Nothing goes out unapproved.
    ~1h/week · estimate

Example: Grok Bot setup

Grok Bot routine: Inbox triage with drafted replies
Schedule: Twice daily 9:00 and 15:00

Twice a day, go through new emails. Label each as Reply, FYI or Ignore. For Reply, write a draft in my voice (short, friendly, direct) and save it as a draft, never send. Send me a list of drafts to approve and any FYIs worth knowing.

Rules: draft first, never send or post anything external without my approval. Keep summaries short.

What to keep in mind

  • Connectors are account-wide, so every Bot on your account can use one you install.
  • Remove a connector and revoke it in the app itself when you no longer need it.
