Grok Bot vs Claude Code vs Codex vs Grok Build: which does what for coding?

Updated · by Rosh Perera

They do different work. xAI calls Grok Bot "a computer-use agent that operates applications, browsers, and development environments" on a cloud computer. Claude Code, Codex and Grok Build are coding agents: Anthropic says Claude Code "reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands".

xAI's docs say a Bot can hand coding work to a Cursor Cloud Agent. Not sure which work to hand off first? Take our free quiz. We're an independent site, not part of xAI or Cursor.

Which coding agent does what, and how do they work together?

  • What each one is, in its maker's words

Grok Bot: "Grok Bot is a computer-use agent that operates applications, browsers, and development environments." "It runs in Cursor's cloud, and each user's work executes on a dedicated cloud computer." (xAI's Teams and Enterprises docs). Claude Code: "Claude Code is an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools." (Anthropic: Claude Code overview). Codex cloud: "Give Codex coding tasks to work through in the cloud, from investigating bugs to building features." (OpenAI: Codex cloud). Grok Build: "A powerful coding agent for complex work" (xAI: Grok Build). Each maker's page was checked 21 Oct 2026.

  • Where each one runs

Grok Bot works on its cloud computer, with a browser, a command line and your connected apps. Claude Code runs in your terminal, IDE, desktop app or browser, per Anthropic. Codex cloud runs tasks in the cloud, and OpenAI says "Each task has its own workspace and can keep working while your computer is asleep." Grok Build is xAI's coding agent, with its own product page (all checked 21 Oct 2026).

  • Using a Bot with a coding agent

xAI's docs say "A Bot can hand coding work to a Cloud Agent." A team admin switch "Allows or blocks Bots delegating coding tasks to Cursor Cloud Agents." and "Delegated work runs on separate computers under your existing Cloud Agent controls." (xAI's Teams and Enterprises docs). If your coding tools live on your own Mac or PC, note that "A Bot runs commands on your local computer only under the local execution policy", which is per-command approval by default (Cursor docs: Grok Bot work).

  • Who bills for what

Each product is sold by its own maker, so check Anthropic's, OpenAI's and xAI's own pricing pages before you add one. Work a Bot hands to a Cursor Cloud Agent runs under your Cloud Agent controls, not on the Bot's computer. Our usage check shows where your Grok Bot usage is going.

  • Picking by the work

Coordinate: a Bot that reads your issues, writes the plan, chases the review and posts the summary. Build: a coding agent working in the repo. Review: a person, or a second agent, checking the change before it ships. Keep production changes behind approval, since xAI lists them among actions that need an explicit boundary (xAI's Approvals docs).

Example: Grok Bot setup

Grok Bot routine: Bug watch from user reports
Schedule: Daily 12:00

What to keep behind your approval

  • Never let any agent push to production without your OK. Add an Ask first rule for deploys and merges.
  • Don't give a Bot broad access to your own machine. xAI's Approvals docs say: "Use Never allow unless a Bot has a specific reason to work on your local files."
  • Product pages change fast. Re-read each maker's page before you pay for a plan.

FAQ

Is Grok Bot better than Claude Code for coding?

They're built for different work. Claude Code is a coding agent in your terminal or IDE. Grok Bot is a computer-use agent on a cloud computer, and it can hand coding work to a Cursor Cloud Agent (xAI's docs).

Can Grok Bot use Claude Code or Codex?

xAI documents handing coding work to Cursor Cloud Agents. It doesn't document Claude Code or Codex as Grok Bot connectors (checked 21 Oct 2026). Running a tool on your own computer needs the local execution policy and your approval.

What is Grok Build?

xAI's coding agent. xAI describes it as a powerful coding agent for complex work. It's a separate product from Grok Bot.

Do I need a coding agent if I have Grok Bot?

Only if you write software. For admin, inbox, research and reporting work, a Bot alone is usually enough. For repo work, you can pair a Bot with a coding agent.
